Institute History

  

Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology. Sarang, a fully Autonomous Institute of Govt. of Orissa.(Formerly Orissa College of Engineering) came in to existence in the year 1982. The Institution was inaugurated by the then Hon'ble Chief Minister of Orissa, Sri J. B. Pattnaik on 6.3.1983 as an affiliated college to the Utkal University.Initially the institution was managed directly by the Govt. of Orissa.There after as per the decision of the Govt. of Orissa, the institution came under the management of a registered autonomous society with effect from 1.4.1984. The Modern Polytechnic, offering Diploma courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering was merged with the above society with effect from 1.4.1987 under the nomenclature of " Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang".

Amidst the vast and fast growing industrial background, the institute is situated in the district of Dhenkanal in the State of Orissa. It is located 8 K.M. away from Talcher on the bank of river Brahmani and is connected with other important places of Orissa by N.H.23/200. The Institute has its administrative buildings, hostel buildings and staff quarters. The campus spreads over an area 176 acres of land. The institute offers the following courses leading to:

1.Bachelor Degree in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Metallurgy and Materials Engineering


2.Diploma in Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunication, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering. 

The institute also offers a 3 years course of Master in Computer Application (MCA).

Besides the above, 2 years part time evening Diploma courses in Electrical &Mechanical Engg., have been started under continuing education programme from the session 1995-96.

The institute is fully residential with hostel facilities and a sprawling playground with a basketball court. The indoor badminton court,gymnasium in the Health Club has already been started. The institute has central infrastructure like Bank, Post Office, Dispensary and Schooling facilities upto high school level in its campus. It has a number of staff quarters and an Officer's Hostel to accommodate bachelor faculty members.

The institute has well-developed laboratories equipped with sophisticated equipments. It has central library and a Computer Center with IBM Infinity 5000 server and number of PCs and HP 9000-712 Work-station. Besides the central computational facilities mini systems/PCs are also available in each department. The institute has also a CAD Center.

At integrated Rural Energy Planning Program (IREP) Technical Backup unit has been established in the Institute by the Planning Commission of India.

The serene atmosphere available at Sarang offers the students optimum opportunity to concentrate on studies. Priority is given through routine curricular programs towards improvement of practical knowledge. In order to provide complete exposure to industrial life, the students are taken to nearby Industrial organizations such as NALCO, N.T.P.C, Talcher Thermal., M.C.L., N.T.P.C.Kaniha, Rengali Dam Project, Samal Barrage, Heavy Water Project etc., on week ends and holidays. Industrial visits for the students are also arranged to places of industrial importance such as Rourkela, Kansbahal, Sunabeda, Burla, Hirakud, Paradeep and Industrial Estate, Bhubaneswar etc. Besides,all India study-tour is also arranged for pre-final year students to visit some industries at National level as well as other places of historical importance. Every effort is being made to improve various dimensions of students personalities by conducting regular cultural programmes, technical exercises, athletic, sports and games and other extra curricular activities.

Campus selection of students are being conducted regularly by reputed firms like INFOSYS, BFL, Software/Patni Computer Systems, Tata Consultancy Services, Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Information Technology), Defence services and Tata Refractories Ltd., etc.
